Labour Movement Vows Defiance Amid Police Probe of NLC President: Threatens Nationwide Shutdown
Following the police's invitation of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on serious allegations including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime, the NLC has vowed not to be silenced by what it describes as state-sponsored intimidation and harassment. The labor movement emphasized its commitment to opposing policies that cause mass suffering and hunger, criticizing certain interest groups for attempting to stifle the NLC's leadership.
The NLC also issued a strong warning that its affiliates would shut down the economy if Ajaero were arrested. Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Chief Femi Falana, SAN, representing the NLC, explained that Ajaero could not respond to the police's invitation on the requested date but would be available on August 29.
This situation has drawn widespread condemnation from global workers' organizations and civil society groups, including Amnesty International Nigeria and ActionAid. They have expressed strong disapproval of the police's actions, viewing them as an attempt to undermine the NLC's legitimate activities. An NLC leader, speaking to Vanguard, reiterated the organization's resolve to continue its struggle, noting that the government's efforts to silence them were in response to their advocacy for workers who are suffering and in pain. The leader also dismissed claims related to an operator at Labour House, suggesting that the state was using this issue as a pretext to weaken the labor movement.
